seams good?

some updates in creativity coming at you from a sun-soaked garage in santa cruz california.

i know i haven't written in a while, but as my life begins to take the form of more manageable bubbles of time, i am finding it necessary for me to share what i've been thinking about. to update you on what has happened: after finishing my costume job at the berkeley rep theatre in july, i moved back to santa cruz for the summer and have been making art here for the past few months. after a year of stitching elaborate dresses from the 1880s, folding nude thongs and schmoozing with billie joe, i realized i really missed making my own art and decided to isolate myself in a place where i could get my groove back, santa cruz. for the past few months i have been working on a series of sculptures and experimental wall drawings about clothing, using some of my new making skills that i learned in the costume shop. for those of you that remember what i did for my thesis, these pieces are jumping off from where i left off.

in some of the pieces, i have been combining multiple followed paper patterns together, and experimenting with the outcome.

other pieces are combines of found clothing and commercial patterns, showing the history of making in the followed directions juxtaposed with the garment that has a sentimental history of its own. still obsessed with the bargain barn, i've been rummaging and unmaking and re-purposing, gathering and not to mention beach babing.

i have also been making these 'seam drawings' that allow for the seams (the location of most of the labor) to draw lines on the walls outlining the garments they hold together.

aside from sculpture, i have also been making 'green' clothing out of recycled materials and selling them in my etsy shop. it has also been a fun opportunity to pretend to be a model. rarrgh.

the latest news is that i am about to embark for new york to help our friend andrei and work on sets and costumes for some music videos he is working on, and then i am going to philadelphia to spend 3 months doing an apprenticeship at the fabric workshop museum. i will definitely throw up more internet updates about what that experience is like, as i will be apprenticing for some bomb artists like jim drain and possibly nick cave. i am going to learn how to print my own fabric and hopefully will incorporate some screen printing into my work. i am hoping to show what i am making now and what i make in philly at a show at the appendix space, run by our friend travis and zach and josh in portland, oregon.
