hey all. haven't said anything in a while, and i just realized i have something relevant to inform cascus about: tomorrow, i'm playing a show with my band at the whitney museum in nyc as part of a concert series they have in the summers. i guess this is the second year they've done this.

it's been really interesting being scheduled to play such a prestigious venue: all of a sudden we've been elevated to some special status in a lot of people's minds. we're going to play the same set of songs we've been playing on tour for the last number of months, and we haven't released any new recordings in 6 months, but because it's the whitney, we've been getting a lot of press, and i've been getting a lot of attention from my family as well as from friends i haven't seen in a long time, or who've never seen us play. i'm not ungrateful-- i think it's amazing actually-- but i've been ruminating over age-old issues of legitimacy in the art world and art vs commercialism, blah blah blah. it feels like we've already impressed people and we haven't even played the show yet. it doesn't even matter if they like the music or the performance, already the mere scheduling of this show has made an impact on the way people perceive us. although the attention could just be setting up a great big disappointment, i'm pretty sure it's just a good thing, and that no matter how the show goes, the deed is done.
it's funny.
the show will almost certainly be less enjoyable than the majority of the rest of our shows because, ironically, the whitney does not have a room with acoustics or a sound system that holds a candle to the quality of dirty clubs across america.
but we will be exhibiting our art in the same building that george condo exhibited his art in just a few months ago. and art is art, apparently, no matter the medium. we've been writing pop songs for the last 4 years, and of course music is a form of art, but our pop songs just got deemed Art, or at least that's the implication. it's also just so weird that this 'indie rock scene' i've come to know so well is leaking its way out of brooklyn+theinternet and into manhattan+intellectualmuseumspace. not just us or this show, but all over the place.
i don't mean to sound down about it. in fact i'm really excited. and i feel very lucky. so if you're around, please come. it's early (7pm), the skidmore-born band Darlings is opening, and it's 'pay what you want', so if you've got the time you can go earlier to check out some dope visual art upstairs. i'm sure now that i've written this the show will be canceled or something, but assuming all goes to plan, tomorrow i'll be rockin a show closer to my fam's apt than ever before.
love,
ted
PS
our first lp is being mastered tomorrow, and we're going to put it out in the fall on cantora records. i've been working on it for over a year now, so to say that it's almost done is verging on satisfying.
for the cover art, we bought an image from this dude: http://www.flickr.com/photos/vrno/
who i found on the internet (did one of you show him to me? because i can't remember how i first came across him).
and i'm going to direct a music video for us next month. so if any of you are around nyc and might want to help on an art-intensive video shoot, let me know.
PPS
post more stuff! i really love seeing/reading about what you all are up to.
