first off, this blog is pretty dope. good looks all around. I'm living in Middletown (with jeff) in an apartment we furnished entirely out of dumpstering during senior week. my house is full of my friends art, and is the sweetest place in town in my book. if any of you find yourselves in this central connecticut zone, you should really call me, and come get some free food and we can have friendly hospitality activities together!
i work at neon, making sandwiches. when i'm not working there, ive been adventuring, trying to get my documentation together, and developing my taste for wine. i scanned some player piano reels the other day, i really like the positioning of the holes relative to the lyrics.

so,
1. love you all!
2. come visit me, seriously.
3. i am having a lazy summer.
4. this is what this blog could have been:

What's a "player piano reel"?
A player piano is this really rad sort of mechanical record player piano. It plays these reels that have all these holes in them like some sort of spy code. You put in the reel and crank (pump with your feet? if i remember correctly?) and the song plays. its pretty rad. i have a distinct memory of meeting an old man who had one when i was a kid and hanging out at his house with him and playing it and hoping that when I was old I would be so rad.
They dont make them anymore.....:( this was a real find because you cannot purchase them new. player pianos, for obvious reasons have been replaced with digital player pianos, as the maintenance of the mechanical aspects of the piano is costly. i'll upload some more scans when i've got a reel done. they're pretty large, (aka wider than my fucking scanner bed, so the process is long and arduous...
I have an old player piano in my house and the way this thing works is so incredible. Mine is electric, and works by blowing air through a reading bed, and when the hole in the bed encounters a hole in the sheet music (which is rolling along it), it plays the corresponding not. It has at least two bellows and many little pulleys and gears. The best part is watching the keys actually depress when a note plays. Maybe I can shoot a video of it and post it up here to see. Sweet scans, rod
